Betty Woodruff Jarratt Fitzgerald

Betty Woodruff Jarratt Fitzgerald, 84, of Waynesboro, VA, formerly of Jarratt, Virginia, was called home to Heaven on Sunday, December 18, 2016. She was born July 21, 1932 in Pitt County, NC. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth C. Fitzgerald; two daughters, Peggy Jarratt Moore and husband, JR and Kay Jarratt Cox; four grandchildren, Heather Fincham and husband, John, Jason Cox  and wife, Tatiane, Crystal Graham and husband, Chris and Kelly Cox and husband, Damiel; four great-grandchildren, Brady and Carly Fincham and Brendan and Chase Riddle; a brother, Onnie Woodruff and wife, Brenda; three sisters, Shelia Pierce and husband, Bob, Ann Floyd and husband, Luke and Evelyn Moore; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Fitzgerald was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Verna Woodruff; her husband, Arthur Jarratt, a granddaughter; four brothers and two sisters. Betty was a member of High Hills Baptist Church in Jarratt and in the past three years attended Wayside Baptist Church in Waynesboro. A hardworking lady, she managed a grocery store for over thirty years and eventually managed the store she owned. She loved gardening, sewing, singing and dancing and spending as much time as she could with her family and friends. Her smile will be remembered by everyone she knew her as her personality could radiate a room where everyone could feel her love. The funeral service will be held 12 noon on Thursday, December 22 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd, Jarratt, Virginia where the family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at High Hills Cemetery. Jane Thorpe Wendell, 79, of Emporia, widow of William Henry Wendell, passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2016. She is survived by two daughters, Betty Lou Robinson and husband, Randy and Billie Kay Harper and husband, Rodgers; three grandchildren, Anthony William Tranka and wife, Cathy, Benjamin John Tranka and wife, Sarah-Beth and Christian Harper; four great-grandchildren; brother, John Robert Thorpe and wife, Catherine, sister, Lucille T. Dunlow and a number of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday, December 29 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Elsie Buckner Clary, age 81, of Lawrenceville, Va. passed away January 10, 2017.  She is the daughter of the late Wilbur and Sadie Buckner.  She is preceded in death by two brothers, William and Gilbert Buckner and two sisters, Marie Gordon and Frances Pearson.  She is survived by her loving husband, Smithy G. Clary; her two daughters, Rhonda Yates Grimsley and husband Wayne and Andrea Walker and husband Will; two grandchildren, Rachel and Madelyn Walker; her twin sister, Ella Connell and husband Carlton; her sister-in-law, Theresa Buckner; and extended family.  Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville with interment at Matthews Chapel United Methodist Church.  The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home, prior to the service.  Memorial contributions may be made to Matthews Chapel U.M.C. 8308 Christanna Hwy. Pam S. Jarratt, 54, of Yale, passed away Friday, January 13, 2017. She was preceded in death by her father, Walter R. Jarratt and several aunts and uncles. Pam is survived by her fiancé, Tommy Wyatt; her daughter, Jessica Harrison and husband, Brian; two granddaughters, Logan Harrison and Brooklyn Harrison; her mother, Irene E. Jarratt; brother Kenny Jarratt and Patti Wickersham; a niece and nephew and a large extended family of loving and supportive aunts, uncles and cousins. Frank Willard Moseley, age 77, of Valentines, VA passed away January 19, 2017.  He was the son of the late Jessie and Mildred Moseley.  He is survived by his children, Troy L. Moseley and Cathy Baird, Tony Moseley and Melinda, Randy Moseley and Jeannie; his grandchildren, Shannon Gibbs and Brandon, Heather Smith and Dave, Brendan Moseley, Joshua Moseley and Noah Moseley; his great grandchildren, Aaron and Addison Gibbs and Fraya Smith; and his brother, Melvin Moseley.  Graveside funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Greensville Memorial Cemetery in Emporia,VA.  The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, VA.  Memorial contributions may be made to Central Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Dorothy Elizabeth Moore Coleman passed away January 18, 2017 at the age of 87 after a long and brave battle with COPD and congestive heart failure. She was born to Johnny A. and Elizabeth W. Moore on December 17, 1929. She is preceded in death by her parents, Johnny A. and Elizabeth W. Moore; her daughter, Barbara Jean Bass; her late husband and soul mate, Robert F. Coleman, Sr.; her late first husband, Cecil Bass; her late husband, Lawrence Delbridge; her brothers, Johnny L. and Randolph Neal Moore; her sisters, Willar Ferguson, Lila M. Harrison, Carrie Harvey, Shirley Kirkland, Edna M. Birch and Martha M. Williams. She is survived by her son, Robert F. Coleman, Jr. and his wife, Natalie V. Coleman; grandson, Matthew R. Coleman and granddaughter, Marissa E. Coleman; her sister, Betty Gregory with her husband Charles Gregory of Jarratt as well as many nieces and nephews from the Moore, Bass, Coleman, and Delbridge families. She wished to acknowledge special friends from Emporia, Virginia Beach and Suffolk; her McDonald’s family; her unofficial adopted son, George Best of Portsmouth; Dr. Richard Holm and his brother Jeff; her wonderful neighbor, Jane Wendell and Betty Lou; and her very special nephew who called her every week since 2000, William F. Harvey; and finally her devoted caregiver, Will Tomlin. Anyone that knew Dorothy knew her as Dot and knew how much family meant to her. Her “Little Coleman Family” was her life. She loved her friends and loved to garden. She had three great bosses she wished to acknowledge, Eugene Bloom of Emporia, William Davenport of Virginia Beach, and Ms. D. Davis of Emporia. Martin is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Harrell; two sons, Martin F. Harrell, Jr. “Marty” and wife, Stacy; Stuart A. Harrell; daughter, Mary Beth H. John Walter Grizzard, 89, Army veteran of the Korean War, died January 31, 2017. He was preceded in death by his wife, Fairy Bryant Grizzard; a daughter, Carrie Razel and two brothers, Franklin and Conrad. Survivors include three step-children, Betty Baker of Smithfield, David L. Randolph “Mutt"Wrenn, Sr., 78, of Emporia died Thursday February 16, 2017. Mutt was a native of Ante in Brunswick County and was the son of the late Horace Edwards and Ethel Mitchell Wrenn. Mutt worked as an automobile salesman for over 40 years for Sadler Motors Inc. until he retired in 2007. He is survived by his sister, Sandra Wrenn Edwards of Ante; his daughters, Allison Wrenn of Fredericksburg and Kendra Novey of Richmond; his sons Kennon Randolph Wrenn, Jr. "Randy" and his fiancé Marcia Hudson of Roanoke Rapids and Scott Wrenn of Colonial Heights; grandchildren, Kennon Randolph Wrenn, III "Trae", Casey Wrenn, Eric Lynch, Jonathan Wrenn, Ashley Henderson, Austin Perkins, Anne Randolph Perkins and Brent Novey; great grandchildren, Hunter Wrenn, Wyatt Wrenn, RookerWrenn, KennahWrenn, Reed Henderson, Aiden Henderson and Adaline Henderson. A graveside funeral service will be held Sunday, February 19, 2017 at 2PM at Greensville Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Charles Moore officiating. J. Aubrey Harrison, 70, of Jarratt, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, February 25, 2017. He was the son of the late Walter T. and Kathleen Sanford Harrison and was also preceded in death by a sister, Doris K. Harrison. Aubrey is survived by his wife, Judy Allen Harrison, son, Chris Harrison and wife, Sue; daughter Kaye Dawn Harrison Newsome; grandchildren, Madilyn Harrison, Dalton Harrison and Chandler Newsome; brother, Tommy Harrison and wife, Betty Cooke Harrison; niece, Nicole Coker and nephew, Brian Harrison. Aubrey retired as General Manager of Sadler Auto Centers after 35 years of service. His greatest joy was to spend time with his beloved grandchildren and family. Truly a “people person”, he was an active member of Lebanon United Methodist Church and an active leader and coach with the Jarratt Recreation Association. He was an avid hunter and longtime president of Owen Hunt Club where he furthered his leadership abilities and served as mentor to many. The family will receive friends Monday, Feb 27 at his home 2-4 p.m. and at Owen Funeral Home, 6-8 p.m. where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 28. Phillip Earl “Flipp” Clements

Phillip Earl “Flipp” Clements, 30, of Emporia, passed away Saturday, March 11, 2017. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Hubert “Pete” Phillips and Shirley Mitchell “NaNa” Phillips and paternal grandparents, William “Bill” Clements and Dorothy Mae “Grammy” Clements, all from Emporia. Phillip was a lifelong member of Adams Grove Baptist Church where he served as assistant pianist and assistant choir director. He had an engaging and outgoing manner and enjoyed playing music and singing and was known by many for his talents working on and detailing automobiles. He is survived by his parents, Earl and BeeBee Clements of Emporia; uncles, D. L. Phillips of Capron; Donnie Wayne Clements (Bonnie) of Lake Gaston and Tony Michael Clements, with whom he shared a special bond, of Emporia; his aunt, Carolyn Phillips Gillette (Pope) of Capron; cousins, Hollie Gillette Bobbitt (William) of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Emily Gillette Jarratt (Dustan) of Emporia. He is also survived by Peggy Harrell who he considered his “Second Mom” and her daughters, Alice, Allison and Rhonda and a special group of close friends, Stephanie, Beth, Brooke, Shannon and Billi Jo. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 15 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd., Jarratt, Virginia where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 16. David Lee Sledge

David Lee Sledge of Emporia, VA died on March 15, 2017.  David grew up in Emporia.  He was a veteran of the Virginia National Guard and  attended Barton College in Wilson, NC.  He retired from Greensville County as a maintenance supervisor.  David was a past president and Ruritan of the Year for the Meherrin Ruritan Club.  He was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity at Barton College. David was a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Thomas Memorial Baptist Church in Drewyville, VA.  He was always very involved with the Emporia Greensville Recreation Association, and he loved fishing, the Outer Banks, and all things sports related. 

  He was preceded in death by his father, Louis Finton Sledge.  He is survived by his wife, Patsy Claud Sledge; two daughters, Kathyrne Harrison Turner and husband, Steve; Pamela Harrison Crichton; three granddaughters, Kaycee Claud Ackaway, Kirsten Juliette Crichton, and Kathryne Jane Crichton; three great grand children; his mother, Shirley Sledge Williams; three brothers, Steve Sledge and wife Betty Jo, Jerry Sledge, and Michael Sledge and wife Ginny.  David also had many cherished nieces and nephews. 

The funeral service will be held 2pm on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 South Halifax Road, Jarratt, VA where the family will receive friends preceding the service beginning at 12:30 pm.  Interment will follow at Greensville Memorial Cemetery.   In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Barton College, 800 Vance Street NE, Wilson, NC 27893. Rev. Donald Orlando Collins

Rev. Donald Orlando Collins, 91, of Emporia, Virginia went to be with the Lord on  March 18th, 2017. He was preceded in death by his wife,  Ann Smith Collins, and his son, Donald Stephen Collins. He is survived by his daughters, Beverly C. Flippo ( Carter ) of Doswell, Virginia and Kim C. Johnson ( Mike) of Jackson, NC.; grandchildren Brittany and Emily Flippo, Mason and Claire Collins, Lauren Ashley Collins, Lauren Hasty and Brad Johnson; 2 great-grandsons, Aubrey and Hunter Hasty; brother, Ben F. Collins of Greensboro, NC. and many nieces and nephews. He served as Seaman 1st classman on the USS Gunston Hall in the Pacific area during WWII. After being honorably discharged from the military, he completed his education in broadcasting at RPI in Richmond, VA in 1947.  He spent the next 41 years as a broadcaster and the sales manager at WEVA in Emporia. During the early 70’s, he spent much time lay-ministering in the prisons or filling in at local pulpits. In 1987, he decided to retire from radio and pursue his real passion, the ministry. In 1988, he completed his coursework at Duke University to be ordained as a minister within the United Methodist Church.  He became the minister of 3 small churches in Dinwiddie County on June 16, 1988. Oak Grove UMC, one of these 3 churches, became his passion and he spent 19 years ministering there until his retirement in 2007.  A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, at Oak Grove United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the Collins Building Social Hall.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 12715 Acorn Road, Petersburg, Virginia 23805.
