David G. Stainback, 75, of Emporia, passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Patricia D. Cynthia "Cindy" Veliky Murphy age 62 of West Palm Beach passed peacefully into eternal sleep on June 13th, 2017 with her loving husband Tim at her side. She was a devoted daughter who was predeceased by her parents, Daisy Bell and Charles Veliky. Cindy was raised in Emporia the cherished sister of Judy English and Michael Veliky. During her life Cindy gave and received comfort from the canine members of her family. She was also a beloved aunt who will be dearly missed by family and friends.

Frank Spencer Anderson, III, 80, of Emporia, VA passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at home after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Helen Carter Anderson; two sons, Dr. Michael Anderson (Bonnie) and Todd Anderson (Terri); four grandchildren, Carter, Clarke, Christopher, Catherine and Richard Kramer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Lucille Kritzer Anderson. After graduating from MCV School of Pharmacy in 1959, he relocated to Emporia, VA where he owned and operated Anderson’s Emporia Pharmacy for over fifty years before retiring in 2013. It was a true joy for him to interact with his customers and employees and he considered them as friends. During his professional career, he was awarded Business and Business Person of the Year by the Emporia Greensville Chamber of Commerce and Award of Excellence by the Downtown Development Board. Mr. Anderson was passionate regarding community service. He served as a member of the National Guard. He was a charter member of Greensville Volunteer Rescue Squad, serving as its first operations officer. He was an active member and past president of Meherrin Ruritan Club and the Village View Foundation as well as a host of other community organizations. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he currently served as trustee and choir member. In addition, he was past deacon chair and Sunday school teacher for many years. Visitation will be held on Friday, 6-8pm, in Echols Funeral Home Chapel. Jane Stainback Moss, 88, of Emporia, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2017. She was preceded in death by her husband John P. Moss. Carroll Ashby Webb, 88, of Emporia passed away on June 29, 2017. Milton E. “Potsy” Felton, 74, of Emporia, passed away Friday, June 30, 2017. He was the son of the late Roscoe and Lell B. Diane Ruth Vaught, 60, of Emporia, passed away Monday, July 3, 2017. Judy Wrenn Daughtrey, 70, of Brink, VA, passed away on July 10, 2017 after a brief illness. She was predeceased by her parents, Percy and Ida Wrenn. She is survived by her husband, F. Jerry Daughtrey; daughter, Sandy Webb and husband David; sisters, Linda Smith and husband Ashley, and Nancy Powell; grandchildren, Lauren Ashley Collins and Dylan Allen; special nieces and nephew, Penny Powell, Kenny Powell, Shay Smith and Angel Allen; many great-nieces and great-nephews and her beloved dog, Smokey. A graduate of Greensville County High School, Mrs. Daughtrey was a life-long employee of the banking industry in Emporia, working as both a loan officer and a branch manager. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 13, at 2 p.m., at Fountain Creek Baptist Church. Wanda Allen Lankford, 61, passed away on July 20, 2017 at VCU MCV in Richmond, Virginia. She is preceded in death by her mother, Barbara Vincent Allen, and her brother, Larry Dean Allen. Wanda is survived by a daughter, Jessica Lankford Hevener and her husband Michael; her father, Lewis D. Allen; and brothers, J. W. Allen (Patricia), Randy Allen, Stanley Allen (Cindy), and Barry Allen; nieces and nephews, Ashley (Adam) and Ryan, Kathleen (Dwayne), Brianna and David; great nieces and nephews, Elijah, Dyson and Sarah; Rachel and Nate.

Wanda was a Nurse Practitioner who recently worked at Central State Hospital in Petersburg, Virginia. She also worked at Lawrenceville Correctional Center in Lawrenceville, Virginia and worked for many years at Greensville Memorial Hospital in Emporia, Virginia.

Wanda was a caregiver to people and animals alike.  She loved her family and friends and would lend a helping hand to anyone.

Wanda was an active member of Purdy Baptist Church in Purdy, Virginia, where she sang in the choir.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Purdy Baptist Church, 186 Smoky Ordinary Road, Emporia, Virginia 23847.  The family will receive friends after the service in the fellowship hall.

Elizabeth “Lib” Suiter Robinson, 87, of Skippers, VA, was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven on July 21, 2017 surrounded by the love of her family. Elizabeth was a native of Garysburg, NC; daughter of the late John Arthur Suiter, Sr. and Myrtle Anderton Suiter. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, William Augustus Robinson, Sr.; sister, Peggy Watkins Slade; and brother, John Arthur Suiter, Jr. She is survived by her children: Susan Meares of Raleigh, NC and husband, Gary; William Augustus Robinson, Jr. of Skippers and his wife, Betsy; Martha Williamson of Chesapeake, VA and husband, Mark; Alice Kish of Manakin Sabot, VA and husband, Wayne; and Mary Strickler of Manakin Sabot, VA and husband, Charles; her grandchildren, Allison Meares Colquitt and husband Joseph; Matthew and Emily Robinson; Tyler, Brian and Stuart Williamson; Richard Kish and his wife Brooke; Mary Katherine and David Kish; and William Strickler; her sister-in-law, Joyce B. Suiter and many nieces, nephews and cousins all of whom she cherished dearly.

Elizabeth graduated from Weldon High School in 1948 and St. Mary’s College in 1950, and attended the Pan American Business School in Richmond, VA. She was a devoted wife and mother whose greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. All who experienced the warm embrace of her gracious hospitality were truly blessed. Elizabeth enjoyed serving in her community as a member of Spring United Methodist Church, the Riparian Women’s Club, the Women’s Committee of the Greensville County Farm Bureau, a Girl Scout leader, and a Cub Scout leader. In 1983 she began a Real Estate career in Emporia, VA which provided numerous opportunities for her to welcome and befriend many newcomers.

A special thanks is extended to the caregivers who loved and cared for our Mother while she was on hospice. Your compassion and many acts of kindness were a blessing.

Frances Elizabeth Wyche Carter was born April 4, 1939 to the late Dora Wyche Easter and the late Sidney Stith in Emporia Virginia.

Frances formative years were spent in Emporia, more specifically in "White City". At an early age she accepted Christ at Royal Baptist Church. She was a 1956 graduate of Edward W. Wyatt High School. It was at Wyatt she met the love of her life.

In 1960, Frances married the late Joseph Harrison Carter and without reservations moved to the state of New Jersey to start their life. Their union was blessed with four daughters and a son. After many years in New Jersey they returned home to Emporia.　

Upon returning to Emporia, Frances became actively involved in the community. She reunited with Royal Baptist Church where she became the first female to be ordained a Deacon. Along with her childhood friend Mary Anderson and cousin Elosie Moore, she became an entrepreneur and they opened "CAM Hair Replacement Center . France's involvement in the community did not stop there. She was an active member of the Democratic Party, Save the Training School Committee, and the Black Pot Catering Service. Frances remained in Emporia until her health begin to decline.　

On the morning of July 14, 2017, the 24th Anniversary of her husband's departure, France transitioned. She was preceded in death by her daughters Sheree W. Moody and Gina C. Turner.

Those left to cherish her memories are her son Sherown Carter (Caprice); her daughters Lisa Saunders, Debra Carter and Jo Monique Drikard; her son-in-law Rickey Turner, her brother S. Delacy Stith (Leah); twelve grandchildren; five great grandchildren; numerous cousins, countless friends and acquaintances.　

Robert Luther Saffelle, Jr., 86, of Burlington died on Sunday, July 23, 2017. Originally from Emporia, VA, he was the son of the late Dr. Robert Luther Saffelle and Virginia Vincent Saffelle. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Islin Saffelle; son Robert Nelson Saffelle and wife Constance Hall Saffelle of Richmond, VA and their children Elizabeth Hall Saffelle and Katherine Virginia Saffelle; and daughter Ginger Saffelle Elliott and husband John VanTuyl Elliott of Winston-Salem, NC and their children Ashley Elizabeth Elliott, Anna Virginia Elliott, John Robert Elliott and Mary Elizabeth Elliott.

He is also survived by his sister, Patsy Saffelle Ferguson, of Emporia, VA and predeceased by his sisters, Bette Saffelle Milam and Virginia (Ginger) Vincent Saffelle.

He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1955, where he was captain of the tennis team and a member of Theta Chi fraternity. He was a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps., stationed in Quantico, VA. He started his 35-year career with Wachovia Bank and Trust Company in Winston-Salem, NC, transferred to Salisbury, NC and then to Burlington where he served as City Executive for the Burlington and Alamance County offices. He was a 1974 graduate of the Executive Program of Professional Management Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After retiring from Wachovia in 1989, he served as Treasurer of Carolina Biological Supply Co. until 1994.

He was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church and served on the Board of Directors of Alamance County Hospital, the Burlington YMCA and the Burlington-Alamance County Merchants Association. He also served as President of the United Way-Burlington/Alamance County, the Cherokee Council-Boy Scouts of America and the Alamance Country Club. He received the Kiwanis Club Citizen of the Year award and the Silver Beaver award from the Boy Scouts of America, the highest volunteer award in scouting.

The family wishes to thank the many caregivers, including the private nurses and those from Home Instead Senior Care and Hospice/Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, for their heartfelt care and support. A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 28, 2017, at Front Street United Methodist Church, with a reception to follow. A private burial for the family will be held at Alamance Memorial Park prior to the service.

Elizabeth Williams Luke of Emporia, VA died July 27^th at Medical College of Virginia after a brief illness. Daughter of the late Elmer Marks and Mary Sledge Williams, she was born May 21, 1933, a graduate of Louise Obici School of Nursing, she practiced her profession in Franklin, VA and in Emporia, VA with family practitioners until retiring. Betty is survived by her husband, Judge James A. Luke; son, Douglas Daughtrey and his wife Brenda; sisters, Joyce W. Owen and husband Glen and Alice W. Hughes; three nieces, Terry Hughes, Kim Valentine and Vickie Britt and five great-nieces. A faithful member of First Presbyterian Church in Emporia for over fifty years, she had taught Sunday School, active in Presbyterian Women and sang in the choir. Josy M. Moore passed away at home after a brief illness on August 3, 2017.  Josy was born December 16, 1932 to Thomas C. and E. Maie Moore of Lawrenceville, Virginia.  Josy is survived by her husband of 66 years, the Reverend Charles A. Moore of Emporia and their children Charles A.(Andy) Moore, Jr. (Connie) of Kenbridge, Dr. Kathy M. Baker (Tim) of Chesterfield, and Betsy M. Draper (Calvin) of Emporia; grandchildren Tracy Moore, Emily Ligon (Brian), Kelli Wyatt (Lance), Zach Baker, Kait Baker and Allison Draper; and great grandchildren Matthew and Max Ligon.  Josy was a retired sales associate with Peebles Department Store and worked at the Samaritan House Thrift Store until her final illness.  Charles and Josy served God together at Warfield Baptist Church in Warfield, Virginia for more than 60 years and thereafter have enjoyed a fulfilling membership at Main Street Baptist Church in Emporia.  Visitation will be held at Main Street Baptist Church in Emporia on Saturday, August 5, 2017 from 6 to 8 pm. Doris Marie Carlisle, 68, formerly Doris Carlisle Tomlin, of Skippers, passed away Friday, August 4, 2017.  She was preceded in death by her parents, James Acey Carlisle and Mary "Pig" Finch Carlisle; her former husband, Sam Patton Tomlin; a brother, Daniel H. "Danny" Carlisle and a sister, Shirley Diane Fisher.

Mrs. Carlisle is survived by two daughters, Terry D. Tomlin-Vaughan and husband, Austin and Samantha Tomlin and wife, Carla Aphayboun-Tomlin; grandchildren, Korye Aphayboun-Tomlin and Bianca Oliva-Tomlin; Brittany Myers; great-grandchildren, Riley Myers and Kitai;  a sister, Sandra Kaye Tomlinson; two brothers, James F. Carlisle and Walter "Butch" Carlisle and wife, Beverly and numerous nieces, nephews and a large extended family.

Adam Bryant Harrell, 33, of Emporia, Virginia passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2017.  His passing was heartbreaking to those who knew and loved him.  Adam was born on March 8, 1984 in Emporia, Virginia where he was raised on a small farm by two loving parents whom he cared for deeply.  Growing up, he developed a passion for the outdoors.  Adam was the definition of an outdoorsman, spending many days with family and friends hunting, hiking, camping, and fishing.  Adam excelled at athletics, acquiring numerous accolades in football and helped lead his high school football team to a state title.  Adam graduated from Brunswick Academy in 2002 before leaving to study at High Point University in North Carolina, earning a degree in Criminal Justice 2006.  After college Adam started a career in loss prevention culminating in him overseeing more than 80 stores throughout the state.  Perhaps Adam’s most significant moment was when he followed in his father’s footsteps when he married the “rose of his life” in 2010. 

Though Adam will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, he will be best remembered by those who knew him as a “shirt-off-his-back guy,” a steadfast Christian, a faithful and supportive husband, a loving son, and a devoted friend.  The joy and excitement he had for life was contagious as anyone who knew him knew.  His story will live on in each and every person his life touched.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Nelson and Elsie Harrell; grandfather Tom Jarratt; and grandfather Richard Jones.  He is survived by his grandmother Etta Jarratt; beloved parents, Ricky and Joan Harrell; loving wife and hunting companion, Jo Swartz Harrell along with their unborn child and family dog, Molly; father in-law and mother in-law Mark and Mary Jane Yeattes; uncle Benji Jones; uncle Benji Jarratt and wife Hope; aunt DeEtte Gordon and husband Brent; cousin Eric Jones and wife Brandi, cousin Leslie Sabo and husband Chuck; cousin Courtney Moseley and husband Brian; brother-in-law Mark Yeattes; sister in-law Mary Yeattes; sister in-law Sarah Yeattes, and numerous cousins.

Albert Randolph Jarratt, 79, of Emporia, Virginia, passed away Monday, August 7, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Adele Jarratt of Capron; his wife, Patricia S. Jarratt and daughter, Teresa J. Ferguson. Mr. Jarratt is survived by a son, Keith Powell of Monticello, Georgia; daughter, Rebecca Jarratt of Emporia; three grandchildren, Ethan Powell, and Amanda and Vanessa Gaynor; five step-children; two sisters, Louise Wells, Rebecca J. Newsome (Dennis); brother, Alfred Leroy Jarratt (Loretta), all of Emporia.

“Buddy”, as he was known by family and friends, retired after 40 years as a long-distance truck driver. For the last seven years, he had been a resident of Emporia Manor where they assisted him living with the effects of Alzheimer’s. He was loved by all who knew him and will be dearly missed.

William Carlton Connell, Jr., of South Brunswick, Virginia, born July 18, 1957, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on August 10, 2017. “Carl” as he was affectionately known by his family and friends, worked for Woodman Life Insurance Company for over 33 years. It was during that time he helped build the East Virginia Youth Camp. An avid outdoorsman, Carl loved to cook, fish and hunt and could often be found doing all three with his buddies at Taylor Mill Hunt Club in Emporia. A man of few words, he was never interested in praise but was always doing good deeds.

Carl is survived by his wife of 41 years, Ann; a son Andrew, and wife Krystle; daughter Lesley Nunn, husband Patrick. Perhaps his greatest joys in life were his five grandchildren, Drew Connell, Kelsey Carter, Harper and Van Walker Nunn, and the newest addition, Ava Marie Connell. He enjoyed school programs, football, softball and baseball games, golf tournaments and having them visit the farm.  He is also survived by his mother and father, Carlton and Ella Connell; two sisters, Amy Clary and her husband David, Beverly Washburn and her husband Kent; one niece, Laura Eddings and her husband Chris, and three nephews Chase and Alex Clary, and Collin Washburn.  Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville with interment at James Square Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville.  

Tony Darrell Moseley, age 54, of Emporia, VA passed away August 16, 2017.  He is preceded in death by his father, Frank Willard Moseley.  He is survived by his wife, Melinda Lewis Moseley; his daughter, Shannon Gibbs and husband Brandon; his grandchildren, Aaron and Addison Gibbs; his mother, Sandra Wrenn Edwards; his brothers, Troy L. Louise Robinette Selfe, age 101, of Skippers, VA passed away August 20, 2017.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Millard and Martha Robinette; her husband, Jasper Alderson Selfe; her brother, Richard Robinette; and her sister Alice Rezeau.  She is survived by her daughter, Martha Selfe Hughes; her grandchildren, Judy Edwards, Michael Robert Hughes and Danielle Hughes Dillow; two great grandchildren, Jennifer Edwards and Brandon Hughes; one great great granddaughter, Riley Dillow; and her brother, Millard R.
