Lawrence Olson Carter, 90, AKA Mr. Camp Kehukee, of Stony Creek, Virginia entered eternal rest  in the House of The Lord  to join his beloved wife, Mae on Saturday, August 19, 2017. He was the son of the late Lloyd and Fannie Carter and was also preceded in death by two brothers, L. J. Carter and Homer W. Carter; five sisters, Emily Howard, Evelyn Modlin, Jean Worrell, Barbara Harrell and Marjorie Burgess.

Mr. Carter is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Gregory-Adams and devoted friend, J. N. Gibbs, Jr. of Dolphin, Virginia; son, L. Chester Carter and devoted friend, Joyce Williams, both of Stony Creek; three loving and beautiful granddaughters, Ashley Stainback and husband, Ryan and their daughter, Lillie Mae  all of Stony Creek; Crystal Carter of Newport News and their mother Sylvia B. Carter of Stony Creek who was a devoted daughter -in-law for many years and Sammantha Thomas and husband, Dustin and their son, Easton Cole of Jackson, NC; a sister, Juliette Moore of Richmond; sister-in-law, Mary Reed of Churchville, Virginia; three brothers-in-law, Eddie Jarratt of Salem, Virginia, Henry Jarratt of Stuart, Virginia and W. C. Burgess who was especially devoted to Lawrence;  and a number of nieces and nephews; also devoted friend and caretaker, Keith Urquart; and caretaker Taylor Williams and special friend to the family Gerald (Juicy) Taylor.

Mr. Carter was a retired farmer and builder and a lifelong Deacon at Readville Baptist Church and along with his wife, Mae worked diligently to build and maintain Camp Kehukee with the Petersburg Baptist Association. His remains will lie in state Wednesday, August 23 at Camp Kehukee 17414 Shands Rd., Petersburg, Virginia where the family will receive friends 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m and where the funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Readville Baptist Church Cemetery, Sussex, Virginia. Betty D. Norman, 77, of Jarratt, passed away Saturday, August 19, 2017. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward C. Norman and a daughter, Renee’ N. Swiger. Mrs. Norman is survived by a son, Edward L. Norman and wife, Angela of Chester; daughter, Lesha L. Booden of Jarratt; three grandchildren, Amanda Stepp and husband, Andrew, Tommy Norman and Carly Norman; great-grandson, Mattox; a brother, Roger Dowdy and wife, Judy of Christiansburg, VA; two sisters, Linda Wallace of CT and Susan Martin and husband, Danny of Woolwine, VA and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Norman was retired from the Norfolk Police Department. She had a talent for embroidery, stitching, and enjoyed fashioning crafts.

Her family trusts that Mom is on her next journey, with God, and envisions her picking flowers, one of her great joys in this life.

A private memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association. 

Lois Cohen Bloom, 78, of Boynton Beach, Fla., passed away after a short illness surrounded by her family, on August 20, 2017. Lois was born in Richmond, Va. to the late Jesse and Esta Cohen. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, Va. and moved to Emporia, Va. after getting married to Richard Bloom on November 18, 1961. A long-time resident of Emporia, Va., Lois also resided over the years in Las Vegas, Nev., Virginia Beach, Va. and most recently in Palm Beach, Fla. She was a great wife to Richard and loving mother to her three children and grandmother to four grandchildren. Lois is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Richard, son Charles Bloom (Cindy and grandchildren Lindsey and Maxwell Bloom) of Blythewood, S.C.; daughter Sari Bloom of Lake Worth, Fla.; son Jared Bloom (Sandy and grandchildren Jordan and Maddux Bloom) of Longwood, Fla; and special friend Jeannie Blazevige-Horn of West Palm Beach, Fla. She was predeceased by her sister, Betty Ann Pinchefsky of Locust Hill, Va. The family thanks everyone for their thoughts and prayers. James Allen Peden, Jr, 19, of Boykins, passed away suddenly on August 20, 2017. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Archie and Annie Peden and maternal grandfather, Waverly Porch.

James Allen is survived by his parents, James and Sandy Peden; brothers, Jeffrey and Jacob Peden; grandparents, James Thomas “Gomer” and Betty Cooke; uncles and aunts, W.J. and Amy Porch, James Thomas and Mandy Cooke, John and Julie Peden, Amelia Covington and a large extended family of cousins, great aunts and great uncles.

The family will receive friends at the home of his grandparents, Gomer and Betty Cooke. The funeral service will be held graveside 2 p.m. Sunday, August 27 at Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins, Virginia. Gloria Mae White Smith, 86 of Emporia, Va., passed away August 22, 2017, at Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center in Emporia, Va.

She was born May 28, 1931 in Mobjack, Va., to the late Luther Clyde White and Lola Brooks White. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Walter Murden Smith, her sister Juanita White Johnson, and one step-great grandchild, Geneva Ward.

Gloria is survived by her two sons, David Wayne Smith and wife Bertelle Pugh Smith of Wendell, N.C., and Colonel (retired) Stephen Clyde Smith of Huntsville, Al. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Emily Ann Smith and Ryan James Smith; four step-grandchildren, Curtis Forrest, Cindy Price, Bonnie Bruno, and Joe Forrest; and four step great-grandchildren, William Ward, Hillary Forrest, Jennie Forrest, and Isabella Bruno.

Gloria graduated from Mathews High School in 1949. She married her husband David in 1953 and was married for 54 years. During their marriage David and Gloria lived in Mathews, Va., Lively, Va., Miskimon, Va., and finally, Emporia, Va.

The family would like to thank all of Gloria’s friends in Emporia, Va. but in particular her close friend Ms. Shirley Temple for her dedication throughout Gloria’s bout with cancer. Pauline “Polly” Harris Vincent, 82, of Emporia, went Home Wednesday, August 23, 2017. She is survived by her husband, Robert Elwood Vincent; two sons, Robie L. Vincent and wife, Brenda and Timothy E. Vincent; three granddaughters, Rebecca V. Merritt and husband, Tyler, Katherine V. Green and husband, Troy and Brittany V. Aerni and husband, Adam; two great-grandchildren, Caroline Green and Connor Merritt and a sister, Cecelia H. Whitehead and husband, Thomas. Mrs. Annie Mae Turner, 94, of Emporia, Virginia, passed away on August 24, 2017, at the Health Care Center Lucy Corr Village in Chesterfield, VA.  The place where Mrs. Turner made her home, Sunny Side Community on Horton Road, in Greensville County.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Amos Harold Turner, to whom she was married for over 60 years.

Mrs. Turner was a GOD fearing woman, faithful servant of the Lord, and the Mother-of-the-Church at Royal Baptist where she served many years at an usher and missionary member until her health failed and even then she showed her love for the Church by attending whenever she could.  She worked hard all of her life and cared deeply for her family by always putting them first.  Mrs.

Turner retired from the Emporia Garment Factory and never missed a beat.

Mrs. Turner is survived by seven children; James Turner of Plainfield, New Jersey; Annie Louise Lee (Albert Deceased) of Emporia; John Turner of Plainfield, New Jersey; Betty Hunter (Douglas) of Emporia; Harold Lee

Irene Holt “Miss Hope” Morrison died Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, VA.

She was born December 21,1926 in Pulaski, VA, the second of five children to the late Randall Clinton Holt and Elsie Ann Hall Holt.

She graduated from high school at the Christiansburg Industrial Institute, Christiansburg, VA in 1945 and attended and graduated Morristown College, Morristown, TN in 1947.  Upon completion of her degree at Morristown, Irene had received a scholarship to study pre-med at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, with the hopes of one day becoming a doctor. Upon returning to Pulaski, VA, after graduating from Morristown, she found her mother gravely ill and decided to stay in the area to assist in caring for her ailing mother, father and two minor sisters. Her mother died shortly after Irene's return from Morristown.  She was recruited for a position as a teacher, receiving an appointment to the one-room Rich Hill School in Allisonia, VA. At Rich Hill, Irene wasn't much older than many of her students, and was younger than some, but commanded respect from both students and parents alike.  On her first day of instruction, she informed the students that her name was “Miss Holt,” however, the students insisted on calling her “Miss Hope” - to many of whom she was their “Hope.” During her time at Rich Hill she encouraged the parents to petition the School Board to provide a bus for the students so that they could pursue furthering their education beyond Rich Hill.

Irene continued to further her own education by attending  Virginia Union University in Richmond, VA and eventually obtaining her Bachelor's of Science in Education in 1977.  She pursued her degree by attending various colleges in the Summers that included Virginia State University, she was the first African American undergraduate student to enroll at the then Radford College, Radford, VA, and Virginia Tech. She also took continuing education courses at New River Community College, Wytheville Community College and through the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA.

Throughout her career she was certified and taught many grade levels and served as the acting principal at Calfee Training School.  After de-segregation she served as the librarian at Claremont Elementary School and as a computer instructor to the elementary aged children at Claremont.

On June 16, 1950, she eloped and married a friend from high school, George Emmet Morrison, Jr. After nearly 9 and one half years their first child was born and nearly five years after that, they completed their family with the addition of the second and final child. Her family was her pride and her most important accomplishment.

In her early teen years Irene professed her faith in Jesus Christ and joined New Century Methodist Church in Pulaski, VA.  After her marriage she joined Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church in Dublin, VA and was instrumental in the merger of Mt. Pleasant and Dublin Methodist Church into Dublin United Methodist Church on April 19, 1970.

In the three churches she belonged to she was a beloved and active member. From 1970 on at Dublin United Methodist Church she served as a Sunday School Teacher, member of the Council on Ministries, Administrative Board – where she was eventually Chairman, she was a member of the Adult Choir, a member of the Seekers group of the United Methodist Women, Cheerful Adults and helped to establish the church's first Prison Ministry.  Irene was also a Certified Lay Speaker for the United Methodist Church and served as Pulpit Supply for the Wytheville District UMC. She was a member of the Pulaski-Dublin Cluster and was instrumental in organizing area participation for the Annual Revival at Page's Camp Meeting House.

For the Holston Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church Irene served multiple Bishops on the Board of Episcopacy, COSROW (Commission on the Status and Role of Women), Higher Education Committee and as a District Delegate to the Holston Annual Conference.

She and her family worked together in many community organizations, including the GEM City Garden Club – where she served many years as the Club's President, Federated Colored Women's Club, Pulaski County Democrats – serving as President of the Democratic Women's Club for many years and a Delegate to numerous District and State Conventions, Pulaski County Clean Community Council, Church Women United (President), Pulaski County Retired Teachers Organization, Pulaski County NAACP, National, Virginia and Pulaski County Education Associations, Christiansburg Industrial Institute Alumni Association, and the Red Cross of Pulaski County.

She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 42 years, George E. Morrison, Jr. her parents, Randall C. Holt and Elise A. Hall Holt, two brothers: Randolph Holt (infant) and Cecil E. Holt, one sister Mary D. Holt Davis (Alonzo), and nephew Randall Holt. She was also preceded in death by her parents-in-laws Mr. and Mrs. George E. (Rosa) Morrison, Sr., sisters-in-law Mrs. Charlotte M. Williams, Mrs. Helen M. Hampton (Kenneth), Miss Kathleen C. Morrison, Mrs. Clara M. Booth (William), brothers-in-law Mr. Winslow Morrison and Mr. Nathan J. Sokolow.

She is survived by her children Kathleen Georgianna Morrison and George Emmett Morrison, III, her sister Mrs. Gladys Holt Sokolow and sister-in-law Mrs. Mattie P. M. Holmes, her God-daughter Mrs. Sharon B. Dabney (Trey), and nieces and nephews Jacqueline Moore (Julius III), Kenneth Hampton, Sandra Pittman Dobson (Spouse), Randall Grey (Sherie), Tyrone Holmes (Jackie), Alethiea Williams Taylor, Charlayne Williams Thompkins, Joanna Hampton Claytor, Marcellus Hampton (Laurice), Troy Hampton (Thelma), Emmett Hampton (Edith), Rosalia Williams Davis, Brenda Lewis-Holmes, William Booth, Sharon Booth Dabney (Trey), Edgar J. Claytor, Bateman Davis (Jim), Kenneth Holt, Sandra Holt, Derrick Holt, numerous great-nieces and great-nephews and a host of other relatives and friends to cherish her memory.

The family will greet visitors on Sunday, September 3, 2017, beginning at 1:30 pm before a Celebration of Life Service at 3:00 pm at Dublin United Methodist Church, 424 E. Main Street, Dublin, Virginia. Interment will follow the service at Highland Memory Gardens. Dalia Torres Menendez passed away peacefully at her Emporia home on September 1, 2017. She is survived by her son Joe Menendez and wife Tara, daughter Kathleen Menendez Burgess and husband John, and two granddaughters Ashley Menendez Morales and husband Hector, and Olivia Lee Menendez, and two great grandchildren Jordan Xavier Morales and Liliana Thalia Morales.

She was born on March 21, 1931 in Tampa, Fla., the third daughter to Jose and Generosa Torres, who immigrated from Asturias, Spain. After graduating from Hillsborough High School, she attended the nursing school at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, La. which was run by the Sisters of Charity, a group of Catholic nurses, along with the Medical College of the University of Louisiana. She studied with the Nuns and graduated with a Registered Nursing Degree. Charity Hospital was the second largest and longest continually running hospital in the country until August 2005.

She returned to her home and parents in Tampa, Fla. and worked as a nurse. It is there that she met her husband, Dr. Reinaldo Rojas Menendez. They were married on Sept. 7, 1951. After marriage they moved to the Norfolk, Va. area where she worked as a surgical nurse and he completed his surgical residency. It is there that they began their family with the births of their two children.

They moved to Emporia, Va. in 1961 when the community built Greensville Memorial Hospital. She worked as her husband’s office nurse until the creation of the Emporia Medical Associates. She retired from her career in nursing at that time.

She was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir and was at times a featured soloist. She was in the community choral group, and was also a soloist at numerous weddings, community events, and dedications.

She was an active and dedicated member of the Greensville Memorial Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, where she also served her time as president. The planning, preparation, and execution of the Auxiliary Ball and Higher Fever Follies brought not only much needed donations to the hospital, but so much excitement, joy, and comradery within the community.

She was very proud and honored to serve her community by helping the local police dept. and court system by serving as a Spanish interpreter.

She was a mother, who was very active in her children’s extracurricular activities through the years. A fabulous 50’s – 60’s kind of mom with a little bit of “Lucy and Ricky Ricardo” for flavor. She will be missed dearly by all of her family and friends. Her family finds comfort in that she is now back where she longed to be, with her late husband, Reinaldo, of 53 years who preceded her in death.

We know her soul left this earth knowing that she had truly been loved and had also lovingly touched the lives of others. What more could one want from a blessed and richly lived life.

We sincerely and most heartfelt want to thank the devoted caregivers and the hospice staff of many years for their excellent care. We are so grateful for these individuals who make it possible to live out one’s life in the comfort of their home.

Those serving as pallbearers are Keith Morris, George Grizzard, David Prince, Dennis Allen, Bobby Ferguson, Ted Lee, and honorary pallbearers Bob Wayne Mitchell and Tommy Hunt Rose.

Calvin Elmore Edwards, Sr. age 88, of Brodnax, VA passed away September 4, 2017.  He is the son of the late John and Nora Edwards.  He is preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Rose Stainback Edwards and his siblings, Marian Connell, Rosa Edwards, Bryant Edwards, Wilton Edwards, Jasper Edwards and Melvin Edwards.  He is survived by his children, Rita E. Baird and husband Nelson and Calvin E. Edwards, Jr. and wife Kim; his grandchildren, Dylan Edwards, Craig Baird and wife Toni, Holly White and husband Chris and Julie Hawley and husband Logan; his great grandchildren, Tyler and Zachary Baird, CJ and Ross White and Lily Hawley; his siblings, Magoline Daniel, Celia Baird, Joe Edwards, Rachel Parrott and Shelby Jones; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Matthews Chapel United Methodist Church, Lawrenceville, VA with interment in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, VA.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Central Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Gary Jay Dix, age 84, of Emporia, VA passed away September 9, 2017.  He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Capps Dix; his son, Todd Dix and wife Ann; and his two granddaughters, Lauren D. Rook and husband Christopher and Meredith A. Dix.   A memorial service will be conducted 6:00 p.m. Thursday at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville.  The family will receive friends Thursday after the service.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Greensville Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. David Lee Barnes, born December 15, 1939, went to be with his Lord and Savior on September 10, 2017.He is survived by his loving wife Bobbie T. Barnes, his loving and devoted daughter Patti Lynn Barnes, a brother Tommy Barnes of Oceanside,  California, and two granddogs, Carmel and Bizzie.

A native of Emporia, Mr. Barnes was predeceased by his parents, Rufus T. and Ruth Hobbs Barnes and a sister Marguerite Hoskins. He retired from the Virginia Department of Corrections after 30 years of service and was a longstanding member of Three Shot Hunt Club. A veteran of the United States Army, Mr. Barnes joined American Legion Post # 46 in Emporia in 2003. During his 14 years of service with the Legion he served several terms as Commander and Vice-Commander, giving up his current term as Commander on June 30th of this year due to poor health. His passing has left a great void to Post # 46. RIP Brother David.

Funeral Services will be held Friday September 15th at 2 P.M. in the Chapel of Echols Funeral Home with Pastor Mitchell Norville officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Greensville Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 P.M.  untill 8 P.M. at the funeral home.

Emporia- Frederick William Headley, 76, died Monday, September 11, 2017 at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, VA after a brief illness.

He leaves behind his wife and angel of 56 years, Marcia (Brookover) Headley; his two sons, Jeff Headley and Chris Headley; his brother Arthur Headley; his sister Debra Headley; his daughter in-laws Gail Headley (Jeff) and Rebecca Headley (Chris); five beautiful granddaughters and many close friends.

Fred was born and reared in Steubenville, Ohio, the son of Arthur and Emma (Wenner) Headley. After high school, he became an Ohio State Highway Patrolman then enlisted in the US Army during the Vietnam war. Fred earned a business degree at Youngstown State University. He also held roles at Aluminum Billets, Republic Steel and Kingsberry Homes before retiring.

Fred enjoyed woodworking, music, computers, reading and Virginia Tech football. Fred lent his technology talents to many friends and local businesses. He was a member of Monumental United Methodist Church. Despite suffering a significant spinal cord injury in 1976, Fred was known for having a quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. His entertaining Christmas letters were eagerly anticipated by family and friends. He was a connoisseur of black coffee, Mississippi mud cake and Ben Hegge chocolates.
 

A Memorial service to celebrate Fred’s life will be held Thursday, September 14^th at Echols funeral home Chapel with Pastor Rachel Plemmons officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 P.M. until service time.

Troy Ray Allen, Sr., 77, of Emporia, passed away Wednesday, September 13, 2017. He was the son of the late Henry Fletcher “Buck” Allen and Sarah Cook Allen and was also preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Mae Clements and two brothers, Thomas “Sonny” Allen and Robert “Bobby” Allen. He was a longtime member of Faith Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and was retired from VDOT after 38 years of service. 

Mr. Allen is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy J. Allen; two sons, Troy Ray Allen, Jr. and wife, Jessie and Christopher N. Allen and wife, Angel; daughter, Angela Mathers and friend, Joe Herbster; grandchildren, Cynthia Williams and husband, Randy, Kimberly Wilson, Haley Sturgeon and husband, Josh, Charlee Fore, Karolina Allen, Javier Allen and McKenna Allen; two great-grandchildren, Malina Wilson and Aurora Sturgeon; a sister, Peggy Jean Glenn and husband, Jimmy and a number of nieces and nephews. 

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday, September 14 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd, Jarratt, Virginia where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, September 15. Interment will follow at Independence United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Into eternal rest, Moses Archie Clements, on September 23, 2017.  A lifelong resident of West Purdy, VA, Moses  graduated in 1971 from Brunswick Academy and was named a Merit’s Who’s Who Scholar.  He attended Virginia Tech and graduated from the School of Engineering in 1977.   While at Tech, he worked for the agricultural engineering department  and was a founding member of the National Chapter of the  Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity.

Moses was the son of the late local farmers  Archie B. and Ida Conner Clements, and from 1977-1989, he returned home and  operated the Clements family farm in Purdy.  He was named Farmer of the Year in 1983 by the J. R. Horsley Water and Soil Conservation Organization.  Like his father before him, Moses was an an excellent farmer who shared the bounty of his large garden, especially his excellent watermelons, with countless  friends and neighbors.     He accepted employment with Greensville County in 1989, eventually rising to become the assistant director of the Water and Sewer Authority, where he oversaw many projects that raised the standard of living for county residents.

Mr. Clements is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Debra; his sons Robert Archie Clements and wife Trista, and Adam Decker Clements and wife Michele;  and by five granddaughters:  Sumer, Cora, Alyce, Anna, and Caroline.  He is also survived by his sister, Connie Ellison and husband Andrew,  and two  nieces, Jean Prince Ellison and Stephane Dene Satterwhite, and two  nephews, James Moses Ellison and William Asa Rowland. As well, he leaves behind numerous faithful and loving cousins, inlaws, and friends.  The support and love of his community and friends  sustained Moses and his family  during his inevitably unwinnable battle with ALS.

Moses Clements  held strong convictions on the importance of education.  He served for many years as the treasurer and chairman of the Scholarship Committee for the Greensville/Roanoke Rapids  Tech Alumni Chapter.  Numerous recipients of the award, as well as many other college students, received regular notes and small monetary gifts from Moses during their years in college, along with the admonishments to: “Do us proud!”, “Study hard!” and “Get that degree!”  The Scholarship was renamed by the organization in July in honor of Mr. Clements.              As well, the Southside Virginia LandSharks Parrot Head Club, of which Moses was a founding and very active member, dedicated the Moses Archie Clements Memorial Scholarship in June, to be given annually to a local student who will be attending Tech.  Moses Clements loved life, and enjoyed being in three places above all others:  cheering on his beloved Hokies in Lane Stadium, singing along with Jimmy Buffett at concerts, and watching the sun set over the water at his “Metal Mansion” at Lake Gaston.  All of these were enjoyed more when he was  with the many friends he held near and dear.   He was one of life’s true givers.  The friends, family members, and complete strangers who benefitted from his acts of kindness are innumerable.   His only desire in the giving of his time, talents, and money was that the recipient “pay it forward”, spreading kindness to others.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday, September 25 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd, Jarratt, Virginia where the funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 26. Interment will follow at Emporia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Clements requested donations to Purdy Baptist Church, where he was a lifelong member, and long time  deacon, the ALS Foundation, or one of the scholarship funds mentioned above.  Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.owenfh.com. 

Joyce Livesay Harding, of Emporia, Virginia went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 23, 2017 after a long battle with dementia while at Hickory Hill Retirement Center. She was preceded in death by her brother Darden R. Livesay and mother Ella Maude Darden Livesay. She is survived by her husband of 55 years Robert W. Harding and her children Douglas W. Harding and Tricia L. Parker. She was a long-standing member of Main Street United Methodist Church.

The family will receive visitors on Thursday, September 28th at 9:00 a.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church in Emporia, Virginia. A Celebration of Life will follow at 10:00 a.m. with a reception afterwards. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Main Street United Methodist Church.

Donald Lee “Duck” Rainey, 63, of Emporia, Virginia, passed away Sunday, September 24, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, W.F. Rainey, Jr. and Annie B. Rainey. Donald Lee was retired from the Rainey Minnow Farm.

He is survived by one brother, W.F. Rainey,III (Alice); one sister, Rosanne R. Jasper (Steve); two nieces, Mellisa Cooke (Brian) and Kate Finch (Eric); four nephews,  W.F. Rainey,IV, Patrick Hattaway, John Rainey, and Eric Jasper (Tammy); great nieces, Amber Jackson, Chelsea Daniels (Jade); great great nephew, Jarrist Daniels.

He leaves behind his loyal friends; his dog, Stoney; Goofy, his horse.

The family will receive guests at the home of Steve and Rosanne Jasper, 13487 Brink Rd, Emporia, Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at 5:00pm.

Kalvin “Marty” Lamont Carter, 46 suddenly answered God’s call on September 18, 2017 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  Marty was born on March 26, 1971 to the late Lemuel and Glorice Callis Carter.

Kalvin received his education from Richmond Public Schools.

Kalvin accepted Christ, was baptized and joined the Mount Livet Church.  In 2015, was ordained as a Deacon at the Mount Olivet Church. He was truly committed and faithfully performed his duties until his health declined. Kalvin was a loyal employee of BMG Metals for several years.

Kalvin was preceded in death by his brother, Stanley Carter;  uncles, Dale, William and Daniel Callis; and a nephew Kevon Carter.

He leaves to rejoice his memories, his devoted wife Shelly Carter of 11 years; two daughters, Jasmine Carter and Chyna Thomas; one son, Kalvin L. Carter, Jr.(KJ); one grandson, Chance Thomas; two brothers, Tony Carter (Kecia) and Stacey Carter, all of Richmond, Virginia; one sister, Gwendolyn Carter of Freeman, Virginia and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, September 28, 2017 at 1:00 PM at the New Hope RZUA-Belfield Rd, Freeman, Virginia, Mr. Carter will be laid to rest at the New Hope RZUA Cemetery -Freeman, VA.

Hinton Joseph Vick, Sr., 94 of Emporia, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at Southampton Memorial Hospital, East Pavilion in Franklin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Mattox Vick, and his parents, Arthur Davis Vick and Minnie Bell Bryant.

 He is survived by one daughter, Jane V. Barnes (Dudley), Courtland; two sons, H.J. Vick, Jr. (Pam), Emporia, Bill Vick, Capron; one brother, Henry Vick,  Drewryville; one sister, Lois Garrett, GA; ten grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren.

Hinton was a retired farmer and a WWII Army veteran, where he served as a medic. He was a member of Adams Grove Baptist Church, a Charter member of Adams Grove Ruritan Club for over 60 years, and a Charter member of Adams Grove Hunt Club. He especially enjoyed the Adams Grove Hunt Club’s annual meeting, where they served steamed oysters, and spending “porch time” with his special cat Tiger.

A Funeral service will be held Saturday, September 30th at 2:00 P.M. at Echols Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Tom Williams and Bill Harrison officiating. The family will receive friends there from 1:00 P.M. until service time. Interment will follow at Mattox Family Cemetery, 6189 Southampton Parkway, Emporia, VA 23847.

Walter “Danny” Daniel Rook, Jr. 71, of Emporia, VA, died Saturday, September 30, 2017, at his residence.

Danny was born in Roanoke Rapids, NC the son of the late Walter Daniel “Simon” Rook, Sr. He was a retired employee of George-Pacific, Emporia, VA. He was active in his community serving on, The Greensville County School Board, Industrial Development Association and the Greensville-Emporia Airport Commission. An avid deer hunter he enjoyed his membership in the Brink Hunt Club.

Surviving are: his wife, Doris Williams Rook; Mother Alberta Jones Rook of Emporia, VA; three sons, Jason D. Rook and his wife Rhonda of Emporia, VA, Christopher W. Rook and his wife Lauren of Jarratt, VA and Daniel Kyle Rook of Emporia, VA; a sister Patsy R. Brown and her husband Lee of Emporia, VA, two grandchildren, Joshua D. Rook and Emma L. Rook both of Emporia, VA.

The family will receive at Wrenn Clarke & Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service, 1015 W. 5^th Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC, Tuesday, October 3, 2017, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

Funeral services will be held at Forest Hill Baptist Church, 2103 Pine Log Road, Skippers, VA  23879, on Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at 2:00 PM, with Rev. Rick Ragan officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
